The close and trusted friendship between India and Cyprus is deep rooted which goes back to the struggle during the colonial rule. Prathiba Patil called on her counterpart, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias here at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. Discussion were held on the entire gamut of bilateral relations, as well as international and regional issues of both the countries. Both reviewed the functioning of institutional arrangements for dialogue and also the agreements signed in the past few years. Patil said Indo-Cypriot friendship continued since the time of Indira Gandhi and President Kyprianou which has evolved into a greater sphere. She said October 31 being Indira Gandhi’s 25th death anniversary, was an opportunity to the future generations of both the countries to continue and maintain the strong bond that both the country share. The President affirmed her desire to further develop the bilateral, economic and commercial relations in a cross-sectoral manner. Patil also praised her counterpart for the initiatives taken in gradually resolving the long standing Cyprus problem, the opening of Ledra Street crossing after 45 long years, which signified the hope of the people for unity. “The support that Cyprus has been extending for India’s permanent membership to the UN Security Council is always appreciated”, Patil said President Patil hoped that her visit imparted momentum to India and Cyprus bilateral ties. Patil also invited Demetris Christofias and his lady wife to visit India.
