‘Save Himalaya’ campaign has reached the North East as renowned environmentalists Padmabhusan Sunder Lal Bahuguna has embarked on another mission to save the Earth. The grand old man of Indian Environment, braving a fragile health, has embarked on a movement to save the Himalayas ahead of the Copenhagen meet where world leaders would converge from December 7 to discuss about the climate change and carbon emissions. In a packed Guwahati Press Club, the eminent environmentalist reiterated about the ecological threat. ‘’The climate change has created a gloomy picture. Snowfall patterns are drastically altered and the glaciers melting due to global warming in the Himalayan region,’’ he said. ‘’The melting is faster than the previously thought,’’ Mr Bahuguna added. In this scenario, a delegation of eminent citizens, led by renowned environmentalist Mr Bahuguna, had undertaken a campaign to sensitise people on the fragile ecology of the Himalayan region and the need to protect it. As part of this campaign, the delegation has reached the NE. The members are visiting all the Himalayan states besides, neighbouring countries to hold consultations with heads of governments, eminent citizens, media and civil society groups in an attempt to create awareness and consolidate opinion on the need to push for specific developmental policies for the region in view of increasing threats to the eco-system, lives and livelihoods, reported UNI. This campaign started from Jammu & Kashmir where the delegation reached on September 30. Mr Bahuguna is also expected to visit other North Eastern states.
