Irked with the Meghalaya government’s failure to curb illegal collection of toll, the Goalpara District Truck Owners’ Association (GDTOA) has threatened to launch blockade on the National Highway 62, bordering Assam and Meghalaya. The truckers’ threatening call came after the Meghalaya government failed to curb the collection of exorbitant taxes in illegal toll gates from truckers and at weigh bridges along the highway. Goalpara District Truck Owners’ Association president MK Saha said, the persons manning the toll gates and weigh bridges along the highway are allegedly extorting huge sums from the truckers. “The government did not stick to the agreement between us. It was agreed that maximum of two weigh bridges should be installed along the highway,” Saha stated. On October 30, the Goalpara District Truck Owners’ Association had served an ultimatum to the State government demanding to stop illegal toll collection from truckers within ten days. Meanwhile the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has backed the move by the truckers to enforce blockade on National Highway 62 to oppose rampant collection of taxes at the toll gates and weigh bridges. In a statement issued here yesterday, NCP spokesperson Prof. Eugene D Thomas said, it is the duty of the state government to ensure that collection of taxes and royalty is to be made only in approved toll gates and weigh bridges by the authorised persons only. “The National highway 62 is also in a pathetic condition as it has remained un-repaired for many months Prof. Thomas said adding that government should take immediate actions to repair the road and to stop the extortion in toll gates and weigh bridges.
