In a gruesome incident, an army personnel of the Signals (3 Corps), identified as Signalman Sanjay Kumar Yadav, killed his wife and two children on Tuesday evening inside the staff quarters at Rangapahar Cantonment. According to police sources, a team was dispatched to investigate the case on receipt of information from an officer of the Signals unit at 8.15 pm on Tuesday. On reaching the spot, police discovered body of the wife lying near the bathroom of the house. Based on his confession of first having murdered his two children and stuffing their bodies inside a trunk, police recovered both bodies. Police said the accused had first strangulated his elder daughter Pooja Yadav (11) with a coconut rope around 4.15 pm when she returned home after tuition. Five minutes later, he did the same to his youngest child, Premjit Yadav (7). The cause of deaths were later corroborated by post mortem reports. Later around 6.10 pm he murdered his wife Reenu Yadav (28), by strangulating her near the bathroom with the same rope as she returned home after attending a meeting of the Army wives welfare. Neighbours in the cantonment were taken aback by the loud volume of Sanjay’s television since the children were supposed to be studying for the ongoing examinations. When some of them went to the quarter, they were horrified to discover the dead body of Reenu Yadav lying in the bathroom. Meanwhile, the police also recovered the rope which was used by the accused to kill his family. On being asked about the reason for the gruesome murders, Sanjay simply said “Woh lok bahut tang kar rahe the” (They- his wife and children were bothering me too much). Meanwhile police said the accused appeared a bit mentally unstable and was therefore forwarded to judicial custody for a few days. Investigating Officer (IO) SI Mhabeni of Women Cell disclosed that police would seek remand of accused Sanjay after a week due to his mental state. Police sources said the case was a clear case of culpable homicide amounting to murder.
