Refuting NPCC member Sulanthang Lotha’s “blind allegation” that fair price shop owners were the main culprits for not issuing essential commodities to the beneficiaries, the Dimapur District Fair Price Shop Union (DDFPSU) Saturday said the question of essential commodities not reaching the beneficiaries were “baseless and false.” It may be recalled that the NPCC member while addressing party functionaries of Dimapur district October 5 had demanded cancellation of licences of all Fair Price Shops in the state alleging that FPS owners were not issuing essential commodities to the beneficiaries. In a joint press statement, the DDFPU president CP Gonmei and secretary Merang Jamir said the food and civil supplies department have been issuing essential commodities to fair price shops on the strength of the numbers of ration cards/beneficiaries only, and accordingly the prescribed quantity was issued to beneficiaries every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The signatories asserted that proof of their claim could be verified from beneficiaries in various colonies and areas. Pointing out that officers from the food and civil supplies department conduct regular inspection to monitor proper distribution of food grains to the beneficiaries, they said as reference inspection report was also available with the food and civil supplies office. Further, they stated that beneficiaries would be the best judge of the matter since the Union publishes information for beneficiaries in the newspapers to collect their foodgrains whenever released by the department. DDFPU members affirmed they were doing their best to provide the best service for the benefit of the beneficiaries despite of “untold hardships and pressure” faced in running the fair price shops.
