The Meghalaya government has ordered a departmental probe into the tragedy at the construction site of the Myntdu Leshka hydro power project in Jaintia Hills district, a government official said today. At least seven people were killed while eight others are still missing. “The enquiry team headed by Meghalaya State Electricity Board (MeSEB) member hydro Milan Bora will probe the incident,” MeSEB Chairman WMS Pariat said. “We are analysing into different aspects that led to the incident, especially with the water level at the reservoir suddenly rises as high 12 metres during the lean period,” Chief Project Manager of Myntdu Leshka Project Elias Lyngdoh said. Earlier, angry workers of the Myntdu Leshka hydro power project had blamed the MeSEB for the incident. However, the Chief Project Manager of Myntdu Leshka Project said that there was no question MeSEB’s neglect in this disaster.“It was unprecedented and so the tragedy could not be averted,” Lyngdoh said.
