Police, Security Forces still in dark on IRB camp attack

Even after 24 hours have passed since unidentified militants swooped down on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) camp in Cachar district on the Assam-Mizoram border, police and the security forces are still groping in the dark. The suspected Hmar Militants looted a number of automatic, semi-automatic rifles, ammunition of more than 10,000 rounds, bombs and also injured several paramilitary forces. Assam police is yet to make any breakthrough into the incident. Sinlung News reported that Assam Police, however, have picked up a number of people in connection with the incident and questioning is on, though no arrest was made till the time of filing this report. Top Assam police officials including the Director General of Police Sankar Baruah and the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) and the Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation, sources said. DGP Sankar Barua, when contacted, said that police has found some clues, which cannot be divulged at this moment, in the interest of the investigation. Sources further informed that the five villagers who were whisked away by the militants were later released and police is also questioning them. It may be mentioned that suspected armed Hmar militants broke into the IRB camp in the wee hours on Friday and took away two 9mm carbines, two 7.62 LMGs, one mortar, 42 SLR magazines and 20 SLR rifles, machine guns, a revolver, cell phones and ammunitions. They also opened fire on the paramilitary forces. “The operation to nab the militants, who carried out the rampage, is on,” a senior Assam Police official stated, adding it is still not known which group carried out the attack. Independent news analyst added “the attack on Chekerchum police outpost has created a tense situation in the surrounding areas. The injured Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya, Iqbal Ahmed Tapadhar, Prafulla Dey, Vijay Kumar Roy and Babu Hussain Barbhuiya were shifted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Sources said that at first the militant cut off the power-line. Then they launched their attack on the camp.
