UPDS deposits arms, ammunition at Deopani camp

As per their agreement with the central government, the United People Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) on Sunday deposited large quantity of arms and ammunition for keeping under double locker system at their designated camp situated at Deopani under Bokajan Police Station. The UPDS which is currently under ceasefire agreed to surrender their arms to be kept under the combined custody of government forces. The C-in C of UPDS Lambert Engleng formally deposited four AK-47 Rifles, nine AK-56, 1 M21 Pistol, 2 AK- 71, one .303 rifle, 44 magazines of various automatic weapon, one US Carbine, one SLR, one under barrel grenade launcher, several rounds of ammunition, shells of grenade etc in the presence of SP Karbi Anglong. The arms will be kept under the joint custody of Assam Police, CRPF and UPDS locked in armory in the Deopani designated camp. The arsenal will be guarded day and night. It may be mentioned that the UPDS cadres of four other designated camps i.e. Chutianala, Bakulia, Lumbajong and Dillai already have handed over their stock of weaponaries. Lambert Engleng later told news persons that the UPDS took the step to bring lasting peace and to end decade long hostility. He was optimistic on the out come of the peace process and the union home minister’s assurance that the demands of various ultra organizations of North-East would be met within a stipulated period of time. UPDS cadres fully geared in combat uniform escorted the stock of arms and ammunition from the camp to the venue.
