Despite the formation of Joint Committee on Uranium Mining (JCOUM) by the Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) coalition government accommodating the anti-mining groups, the Congress is still pushing its agenda favouring mining with AICC secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Ved Prakash saying that the people must understand the urgency and national importance of the need to extract uranium. The D D Lapang led MUA coalition government had to cave in to the anti-mining group led by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) that had agitated opposing uranium mining in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. As the agitation opposing uranium mining intensified, D D Lapang had no option but form JCOUM including the anti-mining group to decide on the mining issue. The committee has been given 3 months time to decide on the mining issue. However strongly advocating mining of uranium, Ved Prakash said that the Congress will educate the people of Meghalaya on the importance and safety of the uranium mining. He assured: “Mining of uranium will be as per the international scientific norm.” Prakash said that people must understand that mining of uranium was for power generation as India was facing shortage of power fuel. India urgently needs uranium to feed its nuclear power plants which has been functioning at about half their capacity of 4,000 MW due shortage of nuclear fuel.
