A consultative meeting on tobacco control laws was held on November 17 at Deputy Commissioner’s office chamber, Kohima which was organized by District Tobacco Control Cell, Kohima and Department of Health & Family Welfare.
In the meeting, Joint Director & State Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Programme, Dr. N. Savino gave a power point presentation on main provisions of Tobacco Control Act that dealt with prohibition of smoking in public place, prohibition of advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products, prohibition of sale of cigarettes or other products to a person below eighteen years of age.
The Act also dealt with restrictions on trade and commerce and production, supply and distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products etc.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Beiu Angami, who chaired the meeting called upon officials to effectively implement the provisions given in the Act and also stressed on creating awareness through seminars and workshops in schools as well as in the Churches.
The Deputy Commissioner further called upon the members of District Level Committee to work together for effective implementation of any project with regard to tobacco control that would be undertaken in the future.
Earlier, a district level committee on tobacco control was formed with deputy commissioner Kohima as the chairman and superintendent of police Kohima, district public relations officer Kohima, drug & food inspector Kohima, director Kekhrie foundation Kohima, Principal of Kohima College, PS to Deputy Commissioner Kohima and Kohima Municipal Council Chairman as members.
