54 injured in mishap near Dhansiri bridge

An overloaded truck belonging to the Land Record department(NL-11/0211) carrying scores of local labourers turned turtle at a sharp bend near New Dhansiri bridge here Thursday injuring 54 of them. Police said the cause of the accident was rash and negligent driving. Police said the driver, identified as Meren Sashi and was reportedly under the influence of alcohol while driving the truck. He was later arrested and kept under police custody. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Dimapur Longpok Lemtor said the truck was overloaded and that the driver in an inebriated state, failed to negotiate the bend. Lemtor said ten who were seriously injured were later admitted to various hospitals in Dimapur. Medical Superintendent (MS) District Hospital later informed that six were admitted to the District Hospital, five to Faith Hospital, four to Shamrock Hospital and one to Zion Hospital & Research Centre. Some of those who escaped with minor injuries told this Reporter that they were part of the labour force traveling in two buses and the ill-fated truck, for a project work near Razhaphe area under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act(MGREGA, previously NREGA). The youth also disclosed they were from a particular colony and Dimapur which had been granted MGREGA fund but that the project was to be taken up at a different location near in Kukidolong area. Meanwhile, Village Development Board (VDB) secretary of Industrial Village Razhaphema, Tali Pongen has expressed gratitude to Pangnyu Phom, Rural Development, REPA and RD director, Metsubo Jamir for visiting the colony after the incident.
