Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang has decided take up the issue of slapping eviction notice to Khasi villagers in Tamenglong district with his Manipur counterpart Ibobi Singh. Recently, the Manipur government had slapped eviction notices to Khasi villagers residing in Kamranga area under Tamenglong district,” Lapang said. This assurance was made by Chief Minister following a meeting yesterday with leaders of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Barak Valley circle, Assam and KSU Jaintia hills district unit. Lapang said that he would also write to the Tamenglong district administration seeking clarification over the eviction notice issued to the Khasi people who had been residing in that area since 1943. According to reports, the Tamenglong district administration had stayed the eviction notice issued to the Khasi villagers on October 29 saying that the land was required for construction of police training centre. While the Zelianrong Students’ Union Manipur (ZSUM) has strongly opposed the proposed police training center at Kmaranga Khasi village claiming that the area lies within the boundary of the Tousem subdivision of Tamenglong district, a prominent place for Khasi settlers in Manipur. The union while claiming that the area lied within Tamenglong district warned that taking over the land without the consent of the and DC concerned will amount to inviting resentment amongst the people of the district. The matter become serious when the Khasi tribes settling there gave a strong objection to the construction of the centre. The official process for demarcation of land could not be started since the villagers prevented the demarcation on November 23 last, a police report here said. Tension have remained high among the villagers since then, the report added.
