The National Commission for Scheduled Caste (SC) has accused Assam government of treating them ‘shabbily’and refusing to hear their case. According to a report in UNI, vice-chairman of the Commission Prof N M Kamble said, ‘’ We were treated very shabbily by the Assam government. We have been communicating with them for months and now we come to know the Chief Secretary was not there to discuss the issue. Even the accommodation was horrible,’’ Prof Kanble said. However, Assam Chief Secretary Prafulla Sarma also took a strong position. ‘’As per the official information, the meeting was supposed to be held at 1100 hours. But when we realised they would be arriving late from Aruanchal Pradesh, I had gone to attend the law and order meeting by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi,’’ Sharma said. He had deputed Additional Chief Secretary Parul Devi Das to attend the meeting on his behalf but that was rejected by the Commission. ‘’The rules clearly state that the Chief Secretary should be there but the Assam government was not interested to solve the burning issues of the SC people,’’ Commission member Satya Bahin said. Most of the issues sought to be probed by the Commission were service-related matters of the government officials. The hearing remained inconclusive as the angry members left the venue in a hush.
