Civic body elections by early 2010

The elections to the Municipal Council and Town Council in the state are likely to be held early next year. Highly placed official source said that the Urban Development department has issued notification in this regard and copy endorsed to state election commission and the respective Deputy Commissioner of the each districts. The notification dealt on two points that the elections be conducted a day before the date of the completion of the five year tenure and the implementation of 33 % reservation for women in the Municipal and town councils, an official informed to media. It may be mentioned that the first ever election to Municipal council and town council in the state ,except for Mokochung town council took place on December 8 , 2004 , though the most of the Municipal council and town council officially took charge in the January 2005. Meanwhile according to a DIPR report, Nagas News, in a notification issued by the State Election Commissioner Nagaland, H.K. Khulu said that in view of the ensuing Election to all the Municipal Councils and Town Councils in Nagaland, the State Election Commission, Nagaland in exercise of power vested upon it under Sec.30(1) of Nagaland Municipal Act-2001 (Act No. 10 of 2001) read with sub-section (1) & (3) of Section 34 hereby direct that Special Revision of Electoral Rolls for all the recognised Municipal and Town Council wards in Nagaland except Mokokchung Municipal Council (which will be taken up separately later on) shall be taken up by way of Special Summary Revision with reference to 1st January 2009 as qualifying date.
