The ticking sound of an alarm clock inside the box of a scooter parked at the Gauhati-Shillong road in downtown Shillong, police bazaar created a major panic Friday evening. A shopkeeper who thought that the ticking sound from inside the scooter (ML05 D 9368) could be a bomb, alerted the police for action. “I got scared when we heard of the tick…tick sound from the scooter and the best thing we did was to inform the police for immediate action before any untoward incident,” the shopkeeper said. The sound of the alarm has created major panic and brought traffic to a standstill in the busy GS Road area and even as almost all the shops pulled their shutters down. Soon after the alert, the police sent its bomb detection and disposal squad, sniffer dogs, quick reaction teams rushed to the site and took control of the area. “At the first instance, we all thought that it could be a bomb planted on the scooter as the sound was really ticking,” Superintendent of Police (Shillong) Claudia A Lyngwa said. However, she said that the situation returned to normal after the bomb detection and disposal squad confirmed that the ticking sound was of an alarm clock left by the owner of the scooter.
