UNICEF has estimated that nine of every 1,000 people of the nine lakh population in Mizram are infested with the deadly HIV virus, while the official number of HIV positives in Mizoram is hardly 4,000. According to a report in Sinlung, speaking at the inaugural function of ART Centre at Champhai Civil Hospital today, UNICEF consultant Lallianzuala said, ”It is assumed that much larger number of HIV positives remain undiscovered.” The ART Centre, inaugurated by Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) project director Dr Eric Zomawia, is expected to benefit around 80 people living with HIV in Champhai district. If needed the ART Centre would be upgraded into a full-fledged one, Dr Zomawia said. Underlining the need to lend collective efforts to fight against AIDS, Dr Zomawia said the on-going ‘Red Ribbon Youth Icon’, a state-level singing competition, was aimed at extensive awareness campaign mainly targeting the youths. Grand finale of the reality show is scheduled to be held on December 15 at Aizawl where winners of the district will fight for the top prize. The chief minister of Mizoram is expected to grace the grand finale as the chief guest, while Union Health Minister has also been invited to witness the show. A football competition as awareness campaign was also proposed to be held next year, Dr Zomawia said. A central team is also expected to inspect the anti-AIDS activities in Mizoram during November 17-21 this year, the official also informed. Mizoram is one of the five states selected for such inspection. The state’s first ART Centre was opened at Aizawl Civil Hospital in 2007. To meet the growing demand, it was proposed to set up ART Centres in Champhai, Lunglei and Kolasib. ART Centre helps HIV positives live longer life by getting treatment.
