Four held on various charges in Kohima

: At least four persons were arrested by Kohima police in three separate incidents during the past 24 hours including a highway robber, a habitual telephone cable theft and two ganja smugglers. A highway robber identified as one Sungrongtsung Aier aka Atsung, son of Meyangangnen Aier of Moayamti village, Mangkolemba, Mokokchung district, presently residing in Lower Agri colony, Kohima was apprehended by highway police patrol Monday evening while attempting to extort money from Manipur bound truck drivers at KMC dumping ground with his accomplice, police said. When the truckers refused to give the money, the accused persons began to physically assault them. The drivers were, however, rescued by highway police patrol squad. Atsung was brought to Kohima North police station while his accomplice managed to escape. A case was registered while the hunt is on to nab the absconder. In another incident, public apprehended a habitual optic fiber cable (underground telephone wire) thief red-handed near ATI Tuesday at around 5:45 a.m. The accused identified as one Shahoto Rengma (35), son of Asuthung Rengma of Tesophenyu village, Tseminyu sub-division and presently residing at Thizama, Kohima was handed over to police. According to police, on December 12 last, telephone cable of the colony was stolen by unknown miscreants after which public were on alert to nab the culprit. A case has been registered in this connection. In third incident, police personnel manning BSF camp check post seized around 350 kgs contraband ganja from a mini truck (NL-06A-1098) and arrested both the driver and handyman (both non-locals) Tuesday at around 4:30 pm. Police sources said seized ganja was packed in 11 rice sacks were concealed in the truck which was carrying metal scraps. The arrested driver, however, reportedly claimed that ganja was loaded by some unknown persons at Jessami village, under Ukhrul district of Manipur. The contraband reportedly entered via Pfutsero was proposed to be delivered at Dimapur.
