The NSCN (I-M) has condemned the “barbaric and cold-blooded killing” of L. Rejamkhup Kom alias Akhup, former Khullapa (village chief) of Thayong Khunou village under south-west of Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district on November 25 by unidentified armed cadres suspected to be of a Kuki UG group. The NSCN (I-M) in a press statement alleged that one of the armed cadres identified himself to be a younger brother of Lulun, late KLA leader, which was a signatory of Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Centre and State government solely because the Komrem Community merged with the Nagas.
Terming the incident as direct provocation against the Komrem tribe in particular and the GPRN in general, NSCN (I-M) stated that such blatant and inhuman act violating basic human rights finds no place in a civilized society and such misadventures of the Kuki undergrounds in the past resulted in loss of countless lives which continued till today.
NSCN (I-M) also stated that it was their principle that all tribes/communities, big or small were equal on the issue of tribal identity and imposition of one’s identity to other was strictly prohibited.
However, in the case of Komrem tribe, the Nagas, and Komrem community have been living together peacefully as brothers for many years, “so their identity will remain as it is, and shall be under the administrative jurisdiction of the GPRN”, the statement added.
Further, GPRN clarified in no uncertain terms that the destination of the Komrem people can never be decided by any other people but by Komrem people alone and also cautioned the perpetrators that such practices were manifestation of unhealthy trend towards violence and confrontation that would not be tolerated.
