The state cabinet on Wednesday decided to defer the election to the civic bodies in view of the demand made by the All Nagaland Municipal & Town Council Forum and also the representation by the Naga Hoho and Eastern Naga Peoples’ Organization (ENPO). The organizations had requested the government to withhold the election in view of the ongoing peace process. Although, the election to the various Town and Municipal Council has been deferred, the councils would stand dissolved once the tenure is over. It was learnt that during the period, an adhoc committee/council would be constituted to look after the affairs of the civic bodies. It was further learnt that the same decision was made as the High Powered Committee (HPC) which was instituted last year to study into the Nagaland Municipal and Town Council Act had not submitted its report. Sources disclosed that the state chief minister would soon initiate consultation with various sections of the societies on the matter. Earlier, both the Naga Hoho and ENPO had issued statement opposing election to the civic bodies for fear of ramification to the ongoing peace process. On the implementation of the Unique Identity Card, a cabinet committee headed by chief minister consisting of all cabinet members and an implementing committee headed by chief secretary was constituted, sources said. The cabinet meeting was also learnt to have discussed the issue of providing special allowance to the IRB depending on their performance but the matter was deferred due to heavy financial implication.
