The outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has decided to go ahead with its 24-hour bandh in Meghalaya which would start from Friday. The separatist rebel group had called for the bandh in protest against the visit of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram maiden visit to the state and North East Police Academy (NEPA). The Home Minister was scheduled to address the trainees of NEPA at Umsaw during the passing-out-parade on December 19. However, Chidambaram yesterday cancelled his visit to Meghalaya as he was pre-occupied with the ongoing political turmoil in Andhra Pradesh over Telangana issue. In an emailed statement, HNLC publicity Secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said, “Cancellation of the Home Minister’s visit to the state is nothing but a political trick which people must understand. The bandh will continue as announced.” Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills district administration clamped Section 144 of CrPC in view of the HNLC bandh and security was tightened.
