3 held in Wokha gang rape

Three persons have been apprehended for allegedly gang-raping a teenaged girl twice in Wokha on December 11, according to a delayed report received here. Two of the accused identified as Wobenthung Humtsoe of Humtsoe village and Nchumbemo Bosmotori Kachari son of Likhung Bosmotori residing at Sethiekhiema ‘C’ were apprehended by Kyong Eloe Hoho (KEH) on December 17, while the other accused, Chenithung Tsanglao, son of Tsupyomo of Elumyo village, who absconded initially was arrested by Wokha police from his residence on December 19. Sources said that the two accused apprehended by the KEH were handed to the police on the request of the district administration. According to police, the victim had gone with the three accused including her boyfriend (Nchumbemo) to Longphijü (river) where she was first gang-raped and then later at Chenithung’s room. Sources said Nchumbemo was an auto driver while Wobenthung has two wives and four children. All the three accused are under police custody and would be forwarded to judicial custody. Meanwhile, on December 19, thousands of people gathered outside the Wokha police station demanding immediate action against the accused. YSU condemns Vehemently condemning the incident, the Yikhum Students’ Union (YSU) has appealed to the district administration to award befitting punishment to the culprits as per the law. The union in a statement jointly issued by its president, Renchio Kithan and general secretary, Areni Jungio also appealed to all Naga civil societies, churches, human rights activists and right thinking citizens to condemn such atrocities.
