Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Monday renewed its attack on the state government and said that civic body elections should be held as per the constitutional provisions. Pointing out that election should be conducted the moment tenures of municipal and town council are over, NPCC president K.V. Pusa, in a statement, said there was no provision for extension of elections to these bodies or to be postponed in municipal Act. Questioning of deferring elections to municipal and town councils on “flimsy grounds”, the NPCC said it indicated government’s inability to administer the provision of the constitution provided therein. Affirming that Congress in Nagaland fully supported the ongoing Naga peace process, Pusa said it has nothing to do with peace process as the elections to Lok Sabha, state assembly and municipal councils under the constitution of India were regular democratic process. “…the argument of the DAN government that it would vitiate the peace process is specious,” it added. Further, demanding implementation of 33% reservation in the state, the Congress party said it did not see any reason why it should not be implemented fully. “The party once again will advise the state government to go ahead with the Municipal and Town Councils elections where their terms and tenures are over,” Pusa underlined.
