Even as the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) leaders continue to condemn the propagation of treacherous and obscene anonymous pamphlets in the state, a major faction of the party’s women’s wing ‘Cheli Morcha’ today revealed expounding insights on the trend of anonymous pamphlets possibly to clutch the ruling front. According to a Himalayan Mirror Report, in a startling revelation of the involvement of SDF members in the circulation of anonymous and obscene pamphlets since the past 17 years, a faction including founding women members of the SDF today candidly admitted the party’s involvement in the practice since its inception in early 1990s. Speaking to reporters during a sit-in protest staged against the state administration’s inability to impede the prevalent pamphlets’ circulation trend, Kala Rai, a founder member of the party today rapped the party leadership for having lured the women as objects for petty politics. “The party that once claimed to secure the dignity of women has resorted using women as derogatory objects in anonymous pamphlets and is tightlipped on the issue” she said. Citing the recent proliferation of anonymous pamphlets throughout the state, Rai further held the party’s reluctant leadership for having instigated the growth of prostitution and several social evils in the society. We are against women’s dignity being reduced for sheer political gains, thus we want to say the prevalent trend is really dangerous. Despite having welded all powers by winning all 32 seats, the state machinery has failed to end the perils. Although such anonymous pamphlets continue to surface the government is mum on this. Rai said. Demanding a change in the party leadership, Rai said that the Cheli Morcha faction would go for a makeover within the party and if possibly support Upper Burtuk MLA PS Tamang who has already proclaimed his dissidence within the party to bring about a change in the SDF ranks. Recalling the mobilization of Cheli Morcha activists in distributing anonymous pamphlets during the heydays of the SDF, Rai and several other founding members today unequivocally acknowledged to have done so as per instructions from senior leaders within the party. Another party activist Mingma Lhamu Tamang further avowed of having circulated two controversial pamphlets ‘Gayatri Mantra’ and ‘Adhiwakta’. In another startling revelation Mingma further said that the controversial ‘Gayatri Mantra’ that created hatred against a certain community was dropped in the cluster of Rai, Limboos and Tamang communities across the state. She further added that the entire circulation was done overnight by dropping pamphlets through windows. Interestingly, the Cheli Morcha activists who met today made a thumping announcement that SDF women’s wing is divided into two factions, as the founding member were not given due respect by the party leadership and thus they had no role in the core affairs of the SDF. Topping up to the brewing dissidence within the SDF ranks following PS Tamang and former legislator Bhoj Raj Rai’s decree for ‘change’ within the party, the women members today asserted to be within the party but however affirmed to support Tamang in his pursuit of change. On the other hand the SDF has mobilized the inner faction of the ‘Cheli Morcha’ to take statewide protest rallies to counter the anonymous pamphlets propagation on December 30. Throwing a gauntlet against SDF supremo and Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling for his dual standard policy on pamphlets, the dissident faction of the Cheli Morcha today urged all women to refrain from such rallies, to uphold the dignity of women across the state. “The rally is Chamling’s mere gimmick’ said Kala Rai. The Cheli Morcha breaking away in two clear-cut factions is seen as another wave of a seasoned dissidence within the ruling front. The faction that met today also condemned the Namchi incident in which unknown persons had hurled petrol bombs at the residence of dissident SDF leader Bhoj Raj Rai last Friday.
