Acting on specific information, East Police station personnel on Tuesday, 6 pm raided a house at Eros Lane and seized 150 bottles of adulterated liquor, 500 bottle covers, 70 empty bottles and several other equipments. They also arrested one person identified as Ranjit Das (32). Sources further informed that the accused used to sell the adulterated liquor to small time bootleggers and was constantly shifting from one place to place to carry out his illegal activities. A case has been registered and further investigations are on, police said. It may be mentioned that the bottles containing the red color drink do not carry any trademark and the content of the alcohol. It is time the government thinks of evolving a strategy for punishing those who serve such type of highly spurious chemical added drinks. Ever since the state became a dry land these bootleggers are doing everything they can between heaven and earth to meet the demands of the drinkers who swarm the drinking joints in town. Traditionally, spurious liquor is made by using jaggery, alum, ammonium chloride and a choice of essence for a good flavour. When instead of the traditional ethyl alcohol, methanol is used to add punch to the brew, it turns deadly. While consuming alcohol is known to be injurious to health, the consequences in consuming illicit liquor are exponentially greater. Alcohol usually contains a small percentage of methyl alcohol along with ethyl alcohol, which is consumable. Illicitly distilled alcohol contains a larger amount of methyl alcohol, which renders it poisonous. Methyl alcohol affects the ventral nervous system (which consists of the brain and the spinal chord), the cardio vascular system (involving the heart and the circulatory system), the respiratory system, the liver, kidney, and eyes.
