Agar distillation unit to bring economic boom

State’s first Agar distillation unit was inaugurated at Luyong under Mokokchung district on Friday. Sponsored by Department of Land Resources Mokokchung, the Unit was inaugurated by Moatoshi Longkumer, Joint Director LRD and Mission Director NBRM. Agar, an Aquilaria species, also known as the “King of Trees” has a 1.5% value more than gold as the oil extracted from Agar is very expensive that has varieties of uses in medicines and other perfumeries. Delivering the inaugural address, Moatoshi Longkumer enlightened the gathering about the importance of Agar and its economic potential for the farmers in Nagaland. He added that Nagaland being one of the three places of bio-diversity hot-spots in the country, there was huge economic potential for tapping these resources. He also added that the state government under the initiatives of the Nagaland Bio-Resource Mission was in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding with Lao International Agar Company Ltd. Laos for furthering the cultivation and exploitation of Agar from the state. He also disclosed that the NBRM is in the process of establishing two Agar distillation units in the state in a large scale. The mission director NBRM also advised the farmers in the state to be aware of the worthiness of Agar and not just sell it blindly to others for a meager amount as many farmers were still not aware of the value of Agar. Earlier in the program, ADC Tuli Lichemse Sangtam and Village Council Chairman Luyong also gave brief speeches.
