Villagers living in the border areas under Mokokchung district have accused the Assam government of developing land inside Nagaland where Naga villagers earlier used the land for jhum cultivation. The Langpang Tzukong Mungdang (LTM), in a statement issued by its general secretary, Tako Jamir alleged that since the Sivsagar district administration imposed Section 144 CrPC along the borders of Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh during night time, the Assam government has been developing land including construction of roads and developing a Tea Garden inside Nagaland. It was stated that the villagers upon seeing the developing tea garden, burnt it. The LTM said that people from Nagaland side could not enter the area even during the day time owing to the imposition of the night curfew. On the contrary, lots of activities are going on in the area, the LTM alleged. It also said that the curfew being imposed to curb anti-social elements etc was “baseless” and added that the main reason for the imposition of night curfew was for their (Assam) development. In support of their allegation, the LTM also provided photographs of sign boards erected by the Assam government notifying about the development of the tea garden.
