Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) Youth Front has welcomed the proposed visit of Peace Interlocutor P.C. Halder, who will be holding talks with United Peoples’ Democratic Solidarity at Diphu. ASDC Youth Front leaders have described the development as an indication of Union Government’s intention to resolve the crisis in a time-bound manner. The Front has viewed the appointment of P.C. Halder as a correct step even though made lately. The organization has been demanding the appointment of such an Interlocutor for UPDS much in the design of Naga outfit, NSCN (I-M). Reiterating its commitment towards the struggle for autonomous state movement as granted under 244 (A) of the Indian constitution, the Youth Front apex leaders, in a release, said “We understand that the Interlocutor’s terms of reference is limited but we would like to impress upon him though this release to carry the message to the Union Government, the Youth Front is also equally committed to extend its full cooperation to find a logical and respectable solution to the UPDS demands so that the violent phase of the autonomy movement can be effectively ended.” The release while lashing out at Congress party said that MoU signed between ASDC and the State and Union Government in 1995 failed to resolve Karbi Statehood issue primarily because of State Government’s deliberate design to increasingly extend its control over the fund of the Autonomous Councils. The Youth Front leaders expressed optimism that PC Halder with his enormous experience of the North East will do his best to design an accord which will successfully remove the interference of the State Government in the affairs of the autonomy in the hills.
