A general conference of the Gorkha Public Panchayat (GPP) was held at GPP hall, Kohima on December 6. The resource persons for the conference discussed various topics including the role of the youth, women, students and also the problems faced by the community in today’s society.
Bharat Kr. Thapa gave a brief background history of GPP’s inception in the early 1980s, Gayatri Devi spoke on her experiences as former president, Nobin Pradhan spoke on role of youths in relation to Panchayat, Prakash Lama on achievements of panchayat, Ranjit Lama on responsibilities, Ranjana Gurung on role of women, Subhas Thapa on role of different NGOs vis-a-vis the panchayat, and GB Bijay Basnet spoke on the constraints and privileges of the panchayat.
The president of Gorkha Students Union, Kohima, John Thakuri expressed the problems faced by the Gorkha students of Kohima and lack of cooperation by fellow students in the activities of the union.
Meanwhile, GPP Kohima has elected its new team of office bearers for the term 2009-12 headed with B.B Gurung as president, Prem Kumar Thapa as general secretary and 8 other executives were sworn in office by K.P Rana, followed by handing and taking over.
The outgoing team of office bearers had been felicitated by the house. The conference was attended by members from Kohima, representatives from Piphema, Lalmati, Sechu (Zubza), which falls under the jurisdiction of GPP, Kohima.
