Member of the gram panchayat, Somerendro, a resident of Maharavi under Sekmai police station of Imphal west district was kidnapped by suspected militants on Friday night but police came to light only today. However, so far till the filing of the report no complaint regarding the missing of the GP member came up to the police. An executive engineer of Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) was kidnapped by unidentified militants with undisclosed reason apparently seems to be related with ransom demand. Engineer, L Dhaballo (55) was abducted by gunmen while he was returning from office at Khoyathong area on December 3. It was learnt from sources close to his office that the militants demanded Rs 5 crore from the department for his safe release. Further, sit-in protest demanding safe release of the engineer was staged by the employees of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) at the office premises on Monday. Locals of Kongba, home town of the kidnapped engineer also staged protest on the same demand. Meanwhile, whereabouts of the two officials, executive engineer Thangjam Tomalchand and section officer Leitanthem Mangi of the Electricity Department posted in Tamenglong district, both residing at Khurai areas of Imphal East district, were yet to be traced since they were kidnapped on November 6 by cadres of the United People Party of kangleipak (UPPK) outfit. The outfit had taken them into their captivity stating that they were to be interrogated on a scandal involving Rs 15 crore in the department. Demanding unconditional release of the two officials and strongly denying “soft target” of the two officials, locals of Khurai area were staging sit-in protest since the kidnapping incident without getting any positive response from the kidnappers.
