Epic struggles of Manipuri women remembered

“Nupilal Numit” was observed in Manipur on Saturday to pay homage to the brave women of the state who fought for justice against the British colonial rulers and monopolistic trade interests in the Nupilals (women wars) of 1904 and 1939. State chief minister O Ibobi Singh offered tribute to the Nupilal freedom fighters at an official function at the Nupilal Memorial complex. Civil societies and various women bodies also organized their own functions to mark the occasion. A ‘Nupilal Memorial Run’, only for the womenfolk to mark the occasion was also organized this morning where over 400 women aged 40 years and above took part in the race which was flagged off at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex around 7:30 am and ended at the Singjamei supermarket complex. Speaking at ocassion, chief minister Ibobi said the moral strength and courage of the women who stood up to fight injustice and exploitation will remain a shining beacon. The courage of the then women of the state were still in the blood of today’s women, the chief minister said expressing that women of the state will take crucial role in state issues in future too. He also made an earnest appeal to the present generation to emulate the Nupilal freedom fighters and come forward to help restore peace in the state. The day was also observed as Nupigee Numit jointly by the All Manipur Women`s Social Reformation and Development Samaj, All Manipur Tami Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup and Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup at several places in the state.
