In a major haul, 2002 kilos of contraband ganja estimated to cost over Rs. 16 lakh was seized by the excise personnel from an oil taker which was moving along in a convoy at Naharbari junction, Dimapur Monday at around 7: 40 pm. The driver and handyman of the oil tanker (MN -01-7417) identified as Deepak Kumar Bhariya and Yogesh Tamang have been taken into custody. Briefing media persons at the directorate of excise, Dimapur, commissioner of excise and taxes, M. Patton IAS disclosed that the tanker was intercepted after a tip off from reliable sources. The contraband was neatly packed in cylindrical shape in sacks and marked with serial numbers along with the weight. The commissioner said the tanker was bound for Tinsukia after a brief stop over at Khatkhati from where the transaction was supposed to take place. Stating that the keys to unlock the tanker were in the possession of the dispatcher and receiver of the oil and not with the drivers, Patton raised questions regarding the involvement of some officials in the case. However, it was not confirmed whether the truck actually belonged to the ‘Assam Oil’ as painted on the truck. A person convicted under NDPS act could get a minimum imprisonment upto ten years.
