Observing several cases of jungle burning occurring at various places in the state, the state government has ordered the district administration, the forest department and village authorities to take stringent measures to prevent forest fires, as dry season was likely to continue for few more months. In an order issued today, the Nagaland chief secretary Lalthara also ordered the district administration and forest department to investigate any case of forest fire and responsibility fixed. The order cautioned that in case of any fault or negligence established on any individual or village for such forest fires, the district administration should impose fine on the individuals or village authorities by exercising the powers vested in them under the Rules for Administration of Justice and police in Nagaland, 1937. It also stated that copy of such orders should be also endorsed to the rural development department with instruction to withhold the VDB grant to the village till the fines were paid.
