Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), central committee January 21 submitted a memorandum to union home minister P. Chidambaram demanding speedy solution of KLNLF demands and invited the minister to attend arms decommissioning ceremony of KLNLF. A two-point memo, which was submitted through deputy commissioner Karbi Anglong, urged the union home minister to fulfill their genuine demand through peaceful negotiation for the greater interest of Karbi Anglong people and society at large. Pointing out that there had been enough of kidnappings, extortions and other forms of violence in Karbi Anglong, the ASDC demanded violence free society in Karbi Anglong. ASDC expressed hope that an early implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution by creating an autonomous state was the only option available in order to attain peaceful atmosphere. Terming the turmoil situation in Karbi Anglong as not an overnight development, the memo said district has been witnessing gush of mayhem for the last 36 years, adding that “to restore lasting peace and social harmony in the hills it is imperative not only to identify the spark that has ignited the violence but also to trace the causes that have built up the conflict situation.” Meanwhile, the leftist organization, CPI (ML) and its satellite bodies have welcomed the peace proposal extended by KLNLF with the centre.
