Holiram Terang, a veteran ASDC leader of Karbi Anglong on Sunday said that the government has always been dealing with militant groups and armed outfits from the region militarily since independence. “These outfits mostly belong to ethnic communities and marginalized groups, who have always been ignored even after India got Independence from British rule. No government has sincerely tried to understand the conditions of the people and ameliorate their problems”, Terang said. “Any expression of dissent or even of their aspirations would first be ignored and if that becomes persistent, the government of the day would not hesitate to suppress them ruthlessly, in fact Indian state behaves more in an autocratic manner than a democratic one, manipulations, enticements, threat and intimidations have become essential components of the ruling culture” the apex leader and one of the leading intellectual of this district said. Terang was of the view that different armed groups having ceasefire agreements with the Government in Karbi Anglong and NC Hills where the UPDS, DHD (D) and DHD (J) are in process to find solutions. He further stated that “the KLNLF wants the Union Home Minister to be present during the decommission ceremony which is to be held soon. The veteran ASDC leader expressed the hope that the negotiation process will bring an end of the vexed militancy issue in the region.
