A jawan of the 2/11 Gorkha Rifles died after being fatally beaten up by a mob while the captain received serious injuries and hospitalized at Golaghat Hospital. According to official sources, the jawan was identified as subedar Limbu and the officer, Captain Vikram. The incident took place on the evening of January 25 when a party of the 2/11 Gorkhas led by the officer had gone to Kherubari village along the Assam-Nagaland border after informers had informed that some Assam-based militants were ready to surrender. The Gorkhas had gone in civvies to the village along with the informers. On reaching the village, the officer detailed the subedar and another jawan, all in civvies to go to the village. However, when the villagers saw the armed men, they suspected them to be extortionists and started beating them. The officer who went to rescue his men was also badly beaten up. The mob then took the injured to the police but the subedar died on the way. Meanwhile, the GPRN/NSCN has disclaimed the claims made by one person identified as Jack Sumi that he belonged to the ‘unification’ group of the NSCN which was telecast in a news channel. Denying its involvement in the incident, the MIP GPRN/NSCN told Nagaland Post over phone that there was a Jack Zhimomi in its group in the rank of “deputy kilonser” finance and currently in the camp. The MIP has urged the authority responsible to initiate appropriate action in the case.
