Dimapur police has asked the cellular operators such as BSNL, Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, Reliance and Tata Indicom to strictly adhere to the terms and conditions paid down by the regulatory authorities while issuing SIM cards to the customers. The police direction comes in view of the increasing rate of crime being committed with the help of mobile technology. SP Dimapur in a statement said the police was in receipt of complaints that SIM cards of various service providers were easily available in the market without observing necessary formalities. It was pointed out that various company outlets/franchises were also reportedly resorting to various duplication of paper works to overcome the laid down conditions thus resulting in difficulties for the service providers and the law enforcing agencies to acquire accurate details of the subscriber whose mobile number might be wanted in certain cases. In this connection, the Dimapur police have directed the service providers to ensure that such “illegal practices” were stopped immediately. Failure to comply with the direction would compel the law enforcing agency to take action as per the existing legal regulations, police said.
