Governor of Nagaland, Nikhil Kumar described Swami Vivekananda as a remarkable gentle man and that people like him were rare in human history and whose philosophy was still being followed over a century after his death. The Governor was speaking as chief guest on the 148th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanda at the Ram Krishna Mission in Duncan Bosti that was also observed as National Youth Day throughout the country. He said six years after the birth of Swami Vivekananda another great man was born-Mahatma Gandhi- who is referred to as the ‘Father of the Nation’. Nikhil said even Maharma Gandhi during his speeches never failed to acknowledge Swamiji as an “extraordinary human being” and always paid glowing tributes to Swami Vivekananda not because he was a Swami but because Swami Vivekananda had made an incredible impact on Indian society, Asia and in the whole world. The governor further said India at the period of Swami Vivekananda’s birth, was an orthodox country where religion meant rituals and society meant caste and the generation was dominated by caste, religion and community. Swami Vivekananda broke all the barriers of caste, religion and community and brought a light where everyone every began to see each other in the new light as equals. Encouraging the youth on the occasion, Nikhil cited the example of Swami Vivekananda who, at the age of 30 held international gatherings of learned people spell bound. Nikhil said people outside used to see India as a land of snake charmers, magicians, people playing with ropes etc, and therefore, they hardly expected anything different when Swami was asked to speak at Chicago in 1893. However Swami Vivekananda astonished everyone when he addressed the crowds as : “brothers and sisters of America”. Nikhil further challenged the youth by saying that if Swamiji was able to hold such an international gather spell bound at the age of 30 and become a hero; there was no reason as to why the youths today who also belong from the same country that still follows the principles laid down by Swami Vivekananda, cannot do the same. He said Swamiji created an impact on his generation and his teachings left an impact on India and called upon the youth of today to spread Swamiji’s teachings. The governor appealed to the youth emulate Swami Vivekananda’s characteristics of- loyalty, ideology and principles and to practice and spread them. Nikhil said Swamiji’s teachings were relevant, inspired Indians and others and also influenced great minds. The governor further expressed appreciation to the Ramakrishna Society for observing the 148th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda . He opined that Swami Vivekananda should be remembered , honoured and respected every moment as he had set the trend to remove the narrow differences of caste, religion and community from our societ so as to make it peaceful society. Speaking on the occasion as guest of honour, Parliamentary Secretary W. Kithan said Swami Vivekananda was a great man who played an important role in attaining freedom and made our country proud in an international gathering with his speech. Kithan also said, we should be proud of our country where we have the freedom to speak freely which gives us the courage to stand in front of the whole world and make ourselves proud. As an inspiration to the youths, Kithan said the world is beautiful and our country is the most beautiful country rich in culture, tradition, customs and others and it belongs to youths and the youths should take it seriously as greater days are coming ahead. Further president Naga Council, Savi Liegise attending the programme as special guest said Swami Vivekananda created an impact all over the world with his vision and spirituality. The function was preside by Swami Ishatmanandaji, secretary Ramakrishna Mission Norottom Nagar Auranachal Pradesh, also attended by members of Muslim Council, Gorkha union, members of DMC, students from various schools in Dimapur and people from all walks of the society.
