Refusing to budge from its stand on giving state animal status to Mithun (Bos Frontalis), the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) Sunday said it would stick to its previous demand, reports UNI. AAPSU president Takam Tatung, reacting to the clarification given by Deputy Chief Wildlife Warden Chuku Loma yesterday on Mithun, said the (AAPSU) questioned the State government on the issue, but the officer had replied, that he was not authorised to do so. Fielding for the Mithun, Tatung reiterated that 95 per cent of the people in Arunachal Pradesh recognised Mithun as their state animal. “Mithun finds special position in the lives of almost every tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. There is mythological, economic, cultural and traditional value attached to it. Mithun has its role in every occasion of social life in tribal society of Arunachal. In fact, this is the mainstay of tribal life,’’ he added. Tatung maintained that there were many mythological aspects associated with the communities which consider Mithun as their part of life which could be vouched from the fact that horns were adorned in every village huts. The AAPSU leader further said only two-three Hollock Gibbons, which were locked in Itanagar Biological Park, could be equated with popularity and social value of Mithun. “If Hollock Gibbon is declared as State Animal, it will be a sort of complete dictatorship from the Centre to the state. The common public considers Mithun as the State Animal and their aspiration will be sabotaged if Gibbon will be declared as State Animal,’’ he pointed out. He suggested the state government to take the people’s consensus to get the true picture on the issue of state animal. “A public opinion will be the best mechanism to decide on the issue of State Animal,’’ he added.
