Mob torches house of alleged rapist

Irate mob on Sunday burnt down at least three houses of the prime involved in the murder and rape of a 26 year old girl, suspect including his brother’s house on Sunday. The 26 years old girl identified as RK Ratanmala daughter of RK Ruhinikumar of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai of Imphal east district was found murdered after being raped at a paddy field at Ningombam Poirou Loukon under Singjamei police station Saturday evening. The accused, identified as Soibam Dhanabir, a fish farmer hailing from Ningombam in Imphal west surrendered to police through the state police chief DGP, soon after the dead body was recovered. On Sunday morning, hundreds of residents of Khurai area where the victim girl hailed from, proceeded to the house of Dhanabir and his brother and burnt properties worth around Rs one crore. Around 300 people loaded in three 407 tatas and a truck dismantled the houses and fired some rounds before burning the houses. A chaotic sense prevailed for a few moments when the mob started dispersing themselves on hearing the gun shots. A government vehicle allotted to the elder brother of the prime accused who is the Adhayaksha of Imphal west district Zilla Parishad was also torched by the mob, local report said. Police and fire tenders arrived late at the scene where the mob destroyed property worth Rs one crore, Rs 20 lakhs cash and some gold ornament belonging to the accused, said one of the brothers of the prime accused. The two burnt down houses other than that of prime accused Dhanabir belonged to Soibam Rajen and S Debendra. Another pucca building at the neighbourhood belonging to one Soibam Thambal, the aunt of prime accused was also partially damaged by the fire. It was only when the police arrived, the fire tender were able to put the fire under control. Lamlong Bazar in Khurai area, the biggest market place in Imphal east district observed a total shut down in solidarity to people of the area where the victim girl hailed from. They also carried out a rally in protesting against the brutal manner, and demanded befitting punishment to the culprit(s). The murder of the girl was the third incident reported this month. Earlier on January 23, a widow and her teenage daughter were found murdered at Phayeng village in Imphal west district. Also on January 22, one housewife was found killed allegedly by her husband.
