Death penalty for killers of women demanded

“Hang till death (women murderers), save the dignity of women” cried womenfolk and students participating in two separate protests on Monday to register strong protest against crime against women in Manipur. Womenfolk carried out a protest rally and lodged complaint with the Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh to take up appropriate action for safeguarding the dignity of the women and also demanding befitting punishment to the culprit in the murder of his girl friend, 26-year old RK Ratanmala on last Saturday. Students of Don Bosco High School, Phayeng in Imphal west district also staged a sit-in protest demanding exemplary punishment to the murderers of their college 13-year old girl student of the school along with her widow mother on January 23 last. Hundreds of women participated in the rally originating at about 3 pm from Khurai where RK Ratanmala was murdered by her boy friend, Soibam Dhanabir who admitted committing the crime and marched towards the Chief Minister’s Bungalow to lodge a complaint with the Chief Minister. The rally was blocked by police at Sanjengthong sort of some 100 meter to reach the bungalow and allowed only their representatives to proceed and submit the memorandum containing their demands. In the memorandum, they demanded taking up appropriate action immediately to safeguard the life of women in the state and frame a long lasting policy to protect the women in the armed conflict riddled state of Manipur among others. Series of crime against women have been witnessed in the state while security forces are deployed at every nook and corner is the weakness of the state government, alleged H Rashi Devi, convener of the JAC formed in connection with the brutal killing of RK Ratanmala Devi. “We took that state government is more able to protect the rights to life of women, the weaker section of the society in the state. It hurt the people particularly to the women,” she lamented. In the meantime, the prime accused in the murder of Ratanmala, S Dhanabir admitted that he had killed the girl. “…. he (Dhanabir) disclosed that the crime was committed by himself during night time on January 29,” the police said quoting the interrogation statement of Dhanabir who revealed that he had love a affair with Ratanmala with extra-marital affairs around three month back. They met in the afternoon of January 29 a but she refused to go back home saying that she had made up her mind to stay together with him as his second wife. Helpless Dhanabir who had already married with three children killed her by crushing her neck after taking her to the paddy field, police said. Students of Don Bosco High School, Phayeng, where the teenage girl was found murdered with her mother on January 23 last studied, staged a sit-in protest in their school campus demanding booking of culprits involved in the mother of their colleague with suspected rape. “We still miss her a lot. Still I think she will come to school and seat by side like before. The seat is still lying empty,” a student of Standard IX who used to sit together in a bench with the deceased Menaka alias Ibethoi taking part in the protest cried. They also expressed unhappiness with the police when culprits behind the murder of the mother and daughter after alleged gang rape are still at large. Police investigating into the case are yet to find the clue behind the murder of the mother and daughter even though they had picked up three suspects for interrogation. “We are yet to establish the clue behind the murder,” a police officer of Lamshang police investigating into the case said.
