Altogether 11 rice mill workers were apprehended by Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) Monday for siphoning off rice while dehusking at the mills. About one ton of rice was also seized from various rice mills in Kohima. Acting on complaints from several persons on how the mills cheated them, the KVYO raided twenty rice mills in Kohima village and Kohima town area. The KVYO informed that the rice mill workers siphoned rice through a pipe in the machine which led to an underground chamber , where the stolen rice was stored. The organization estimated that about two-three truck loads of rice was siphoned off in this manner during a month’s period. The arrested, all hailing from Bihar, were identified as Baiju Sahani, Chandra Kedu Sahani, Jitu Sahani, Ram Bukar, Raju, Sonah Yadav, Santosh, Kishor Sahani, Raja Sahani, Rameshwar Sahani and Kishore Sahani. While 11 were apprehended, five persons went absconding, they said. All the accused were kept under custody of north police station, Kohima. Police sources suspect it was an inter-linked scheme. Detailed information, however, could not be obtained as investigation was in progress. Meanwhile, the KVYO, while informing the public to be cautious of such acts, has asked to report to the authorities immediately, in case suspicion arises.
