The Meghalaya government today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the escape of three under trial prisoners (UTPs) from the court premises, even as a massive manhunt is underway to trace them. Extra Assistant Commissioner of Mairang Sub-Division Waldis Biam will probe into all aspects of the escape of the undertrials from the police custody and fix responsibility for the episode. Yesterday, the trio --- Hambreas Lyngdoh Nonglait, Ramesh Marngar Demand Marwein --- made good their escape from the court premises of the Sub-Divisional Officer, Mairang Civil Sub-Division in West Khasi Hills district. The escaped prisoners were taken to Mairang from Shillong District jail along with four other prisoners. “The hunt is still on to nab the escapees and we hope to catch them soon,” Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said. He added that the State police have already started its investigation into the episode. According to preliminary investigations, the undertrials made good their escape taking advantage of a lone sentry who accompanied them to the toilet. The fresh escaped of prisoners from police custody comes at a time when Justice (retd) D Biswas is inquiring into the last year’s high-profile Shillong jailbreak.
