Unidentified men killed two migrant coal miners and injured five others in Meghalaya’s coal-rich district of Jaintia Hills, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at Kyrluh village about 130 km from here when miscreants opened fire from their guns to scare the migrant workers.
“They opened fire first to scare the labourers and then they went on rampage hitting the labourers with woods,” a police official said.
In the melee, the police official said that two person were killed, while five others were injured.
Those killed were identified as Md Safiqul Islam and Faridul Islam hailing from Assam’s Morigaon district.
“We are investigating into all counts to find out the exact cause of the incident and the perpetrators,” a police official said.
Interestingly, one Abdul Karim, a supervisor in the coal mines lodged an FIR with regard to Tuesday’s incident at Khiehriat police station only this afternoon, three days after the incident. Recently, a group of villagers had assaulted several migrant labourers and set on fire ram-shackle camps of these labourers at Mynthning village in Jaintia Hills.
