A bomb scare gripped Imphal city on Sunday evening after a Hindi-speaking person called Imphal city police station at 5pm and said a bomb was planted along Bir Tikendrajit Road and would explode within half an hour. Shopkeepers downed shutters and shoppers scurried home after the police started scanning the streets. Imphal West police conducted a hourlong search of the city but no bomb was found. However, the city was shut down for the day. There was confusion among the people and the traffic police had a tough time in regulating the sudden rush. After the search was called off around 6.30pm, a senior police official said, “It could be a crank call but we told the personnel deployed in the city to be on alert.” Passerby Rabina Devi and a former militant, Ch. Sanjit, were killed on Bir Tikendrajit Road on July 23.
