Agitating teaching and non-teaching staffs of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya on Monday decided to continue with their agitation after talks with university authorities failed. “We would continue with our agitation till our demands are met,” Joint Action Committee (JAC) Spokesman Jemino Mawthoh told reporters here after holding talks with NEHU pro Vice Chancellor Prof. R Lalthantluanga. The JAC comprising of North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and NEHU Non Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) has been agitating against the sudden withdrawal of Hills Area Special Allowance (HASA) from last December. The JAC has set January 15 as the deadline for re-payment of HASA. NEHU authorities however said that the university is expected to redress the demand of the agitating teachers and staffs soon. “I have assured the JAC members that NEHU Executive Council meeting would be convened on January 8 to take a decision on payment of HASA to the staffs,” Prof Lalthantluanga said. Earlier, JAC refused to meet NEHU Vice Chancellor Pramod Tandon and demanded his ouster for allegedly violating service rules and taking the decision to cancel payment of HASA in the EC instead of the Academic Council. The JAC has also submitted a memorandum to President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil in this regard who is also the visitor of NEHU.
