After a lull, Srinagar is back in the grip of terror on Wednesday when four terrorists attacked CRPF men stationed in the Lal Chowk area of the city. The attack left two policemen dead and four civilians injured. As per the latest report, a fierce gunbattle is currently going on between security forces and terrorists, who lobbed grenades and fired at Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers stationed in an outpost near Paledium Cinema in the heart of the city. Farooq Ahmad, IG, said the terrorists had run into a nearby hotel called Punjab. “We are not sure if there are one or two terrorists. We are dealing with the situation and will get them down soon,” he told a TV channel. According to an eye witness, four well equipped militants came to the area in disguise and hurled grenades at the CRPF troopers and civilians and later resorted to indiscriminate firing. Two of the four are said to have escaped in the ensuing commotion, while the remaining two are believed to be holed in a nearby hotel and engaging the security forces. Giving details about the incident, senior police officials said that the terrorists were stopped during a routing check near Pladdium in the heart of Lal Chowk. They said the militants panicked when stopped and started firing indiscriminately besides hurling three grenades. Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JUM), one of the rebel groups active in the area claimed responsibility for the attack by faxing a statement to the local offices of a news agency. “The attack is in response to India’s propaganda that the armed struggle has weakened in Kashmir,’’ the statement said. However, highly-placed police sources said that an intelligence input was received yesterday suggesting that LeT terrorists were planning to carry out a suicide attack in the city. Following the input, the authorities sent messages on mobiles to public at large and officials concerned asking them to alert. Two persons including an SHO and his car driver have been killed in the attack. Besides, a camera man of a private news channel and three civilians have been wounded in the operation. The deceased driver has been identified as Mohammed Yusuf who was posted as driver of the Station House Officer of Maisuma Police station. The injured cameraman and three civilians have been rushed to a hospital for treatment. Seven persons, including a woman, have been admitted to the SHMS hospital. While four of them were hit by bullets, the rest had splinter injuries, hospital sources said and identified three of the injured as Rouf Ahmad, a cameraman, Zahdish of Srinagar and Mohammad Akbar Lone of Tangmarg.
