: The Mao community of Dimapur celebrated the premier festival of the tribe ‘Chüthuni’ (New Year) at Mao colony, Kuda Village ‘B’, on Thursday.
Clad in traditional attires, young and old alike joined in the festival, which started with blessing and declaration of Chüthuni by Er. Sani Ashiho, and one of the eldest members of the community, Asosü Ashikho, narrated on the importance and history of the festival.
The older generation had some nostalgic moments while the youth and children were given a taste of a different kind of music as three women groups presented folks songs, which were in vogue in a bygone era.
On the occasion, the elders of the community were honoured as per the tradition of the forefathers and presentations given to doners of this year’s festival.
Prizes were also distributed to meritorious students by the Mao Students’ Union Dimapur.
Earlier, the celebration started with a mass march and warrior’s cry led by P Nenio.
Ashuli Apil chaired the programme and the festival programme committee convenor Dili Solomon proposed vote of thanks, which was followed by a community feast.
