With elections to the civic bodies in the state scheduled sometime in February, it is likely that these bodies would be dissolved after their current tenure end. According to sources, the postponement of elections has thrown up a situation which leaves the state government with little option but to take over the functioning of these bodies. It may be recalled that the state cabinet had decided to defer elections as demanded by the “All Nagaland Municipal and Town Council Forum’ comprising of all civic bodies pending review of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 . The forum of civic bodies also opined that the 33% women reservation issue would create more confusion and division among sections of society. The form demanded that elections should be put on hold “unless and until these matters are brought to a tangible conclusion,” Sources said that in this regard, the Dimapur Municipal Council would be dissolved accordingly and the Administrative Officer DMC would take over responsibility of the functioning of the DMC till a newly elected team is constituted. The sources said the state government would constitute an advisory committee to advice the Administrative Officer in the functioning of the DMC. The sources said none of the sitting council members would be included in the proposed advisory committee.
