Five arrested for NREGA heist

Five armed miscreants including two government employees who held secretary of the Pangti Village NREGA at gunpoint and decamped with the NREGA fund totaling Rs.24 lakh on November 4 last year have been arrested from Mokokchung and Wokha on Tuesday. The NREGA secretary, Rentsamo Humtsoe was returning to Pangti village on a vehicle (Tata Sumo) when the robbers in Maruti Van struck and looted the cash meant for Pangti village November last. He was taken by the miscreants and later released in a secluded forest. Police sources said that the victim was arrested by the police following an FIR filed against him by the village council. The secretary had withdrawn the NREGA fund from Bank of Baroda, Wokha. Addl SP Wokha, C. James Kinghen said that the Wokha police with the help of Mokokchung counterpart arrested the main accused identified as one Moamanen Jamir (45) son of Late Tekatemba of Mangmetong village from Arkong Ward T round 2:30 a.m. Two other accused were identified as Moayanger Pongen (34), son of Late Tekatemjen of Changki village currently residing at Arkong Ward; Mayangtemsu (43), son of Sakumongba of Changki village from Aongza Ward. Based on disclosure by the trio, Wokha police arrested two more accused involved in the robbery, from Wokha on Tuesday at around 11 a.m. The duo has been identified as M. Yanbemo Shitiri (26) of Pangti village and Limomo Shitio (53) of Pangti village, both government employees under Irrigation and flood control department Wokha. Police said that the duo had informed the three accused about the entire money transactions. Police also recovered one 9mm (country made) pistol and five live rounds from the possession of Moamanen Jamir. All the five accused are currently under police custody and further interrogations are going on, police said. An SIT team was formed led by Addl. SP C. James Kinghen, SDPO K. Khalo along with two UBSIs and investigation was initiated into the case.
