Seeking to repeat the income tax exemption success based on Sikkim subject certificate foundation, Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has demanded ‘tribal status’ for all the bonafide Sikkimese people. ‘’I have placed a demand to the Centre that all Sikkim subject certificate holders should be given tribal status like the income tax relief provided to the people here having Sikkim subject certificates,’’ the Chief Minister said yesterday during the concluding day of three-day winter festival at Assam Lingzey, Namcheybong constituency in East Sikkim. According to a UNI report, the chief minister said he had briefed the Union government recently that all people residing in the state with Sikkim subject certificates, including those from Bhutia, Lepcha and Nepali communities, during the Chogyal regime were treated as tribals. Article 371F provides protection to the old laws of Sikkim and all people with Sikkim subject certificates should be given tribal status, he said. ‘’I will be taking this matter forward,’’ pledged Mr Chamling. He also added that the Indian Constitution provides protection to the Bhutia-Lepcha communities of Sikkim and also the Revenue Order number one is protected. Now those people from the Nepali community with Sikkim subject certificates who had received income tax exemption should also be given tribal status, he said. ‘’I briefed the Centre that with accordance of such status there will be uniformity and peace and security will continue in Sikkim. I have also reiterated with the Centre that the old settlers without Sikkim subject certificates should be given income tax exemption,’’ he said. ‘’These are the work of a leader,’’ claimed Chamling taking a swipe at his detractors. Chamling asserted that the SDF government had integrated all sections of the society with the mainstream and had achieved the emotional integration of the Sikkimese people with the rest of the country.
